Just a Fruit Talk

You may have heard of coconut fruits but how often have you drink the juice and eat the fruits? This is one of the fruit stalls that caught our attention during our journey to the Maritime City of Lumut. The stall  is located by the roadside of a small town named Lekir (Location Map).

Something special about coconut drink in the stall was that it was served fresh and the taste was very different from the one that may have been kept refrigerated for quite some times in other restaurants in town. This stall also served a special type of  coconut named 'Kelapa Pandan' which produces Pandanus fragrant. Coconut is best served fresh while adding some ice and sugar.

We were informed that the owner of the fruit stall is leasing a few acres of coconut land just to cater for the demand of this fruit lovers. Looking at the numbers of the customers who dropped by to quench their thirst, one may tell  how fruitful this business should be.

This small town Lekir and the surrounding districts had been economically  prospered with coconut agricultural based products since the 18th century.  There were hectares of lands being cultivated with coconut trees to cater for the demand of cooking oil industry. However since early 20th century , the demand for coconuts has been declining due to the emerging of other alternative agricultural based products which is Oil Palms. Most of the landowners in the area have switched to planting oil palms instead of coconut trees due to economic reasons.

Coconut in Malaysia has always been on demand for direct consumption, health supplement products and also for foods industries.
